This project uses Canada as a case study to examine the challenges of national cinema in an age of globalization. It traces the history of national cinema in Canada through federal film policies and important film texts. It argues that Quebec cinema represents a challenge to a monolithic and unified notion of Canadian national cinema, just as Quebec national identity complicates Canadian unity. The author closely analyzed federal and provincial cultural policies, specifically film policies from the 1970s to the present, as well as several contemporary feature films. This project contributes to ongoing scholarly debates about the fate of national cultures, and particularly national cinema, in the contemporary era. It uses the British and Australian method of cultural policy studies to highlight the close imbrication of culture and politics and the ideological struggle that takes place in cultural policy formation.
