This study combines an analysis of the Russian Musical Society (RMO) and its empire-wide network of educational institutions with an examination of the role of the arts in constructing individual and group identities. In Russia, as elsewhere in Europe, the emerging middle classes constructed and displayed their identity through the consumption of items of cultural capital. The nineteenth-century craze for the piano exemplifies the importance of music as a defining element of middle class identity. This study explores the importance of music in middle class identity by focusing on everyday cultural life. It examines the relationship between Russia's vibrant musical culture and its evolving social structure in the second half of the nineteenth century. By challenging the traditional master narrative of Russian musical culture, this project unearths a richer, more dynamic arena of cultural activity that had a significant impact on Russian society.

Founded in St. Petersburg in 1859 as a local voluntary association, by 1917 the Russian Musical Society had grown to encompass more than fifty provincial branches across the Russian Empire. It supported a broad network of private specialized educational institutions, including the St. Petersburg and Moscow Conservatories. Provincial branches of the RMO fostered the expansion of Russia's cultural infrastructure, establishing the institutions, training the performers, and educating the audiences necessary for a sustainable local musical life. Success depended on the cooperation of local branches of the RMO, municipal and provincial government authorities, other voluntary associations, and educated society. The individuals and organizations that supported the RMO functioned both as patrons of the arts and leaders of an emerging civil society. In pursuing its educational and artistic goals, the Russian Musical Society constantly negotiated with the autocratic state for both financial assistance and the recognition of the rights of its students, faculty, and graduates. Through this process, the RMO constructed the legal and social basis for a Russian musical profession modeled on the liberal professions of medicine and the law. The cooperative and mutually beneficial relationship of the state and the RMO underscores the important role the Russian autocracy played in encouraging the growth of the professions and civil society.
