Shandong guchuiyue, or “drumming and blowing music of Shandong,” is a type of folk ensemble consisting mainly of percussion and wind instruments. It is organized by rural musicians who are mostly engaged in farming in rural Shandong, located on the eastern coast of the People's Republic of China. Shandong guchuiyue in early China was used to play for military events and social entertainment; today it accompanies ceremonies, such as funerals, weddings, and other local culture-related events. Its musical function is connected closely to a variety of cultural phenomena that local people participate in. The study focuses on its significance, represented not only by its musical display but by its social functions as well. Three aspects are discussed: (1) the origin of guchuiyue in China and its specific music-cultural influences in Shandong; (2) the traditional customs and cultural events related to Shandong guchuiyue as reflected by local society; (3) the musical characteristics of Shandong guchuiyue. By focusing on these three aspects, the author shows that to maintain this musical genre through the generations, folk musicians retain many aspects of this genre's early history while constantly absorbing new musical elements to fit the needs of a changing society. The author also provides an assessment of the significance of this study, and what aspects need further research.
