A fala que faz takes up a body in motion to try and understand how it is that a politics is mobilized through aesthetics. Always already in performance, black skin over-stimulates the folly of the Mardis Gras, setting into motion a decontextualization of pleasure, marking time and space through the difference of aesthetic representation. In the groove and on many “ones,” Black people in the city of Salvador have utilized the Carnaval as a political tool and sometimes weapon to articulate their needs for unfettered access to the rights of citizenship—space, health, religious freedom, fair wages and work, unmitigated pleasure and joy. In this dissertation I present through ethnographic research, performance excavation, and oral histories scholarship as an epic poem—contestatory voices determined to tell the story “right,” and make it matter; this telling of things usually parsed out over rhythm, sweat, spirit and shaking backsides.
