The final chapter of findings is From Queer to Gay. Here I look more specifically at how the lives, rituals, and social context of the school combine into curricular veins through which sexuality and sensuality are experienced.

The final chapter of findings is From Queer to Gay. Here I look more specifically at how the lives, rituals, and social context of the school combine into curricular veins through which sexuality and sensuality are experienced.

The next chapter portrays the first principal, Randall: the intellectual, the father, the iconoclast, the libidinal-artistic-manipulative-democrat. Randall is the school's foremost ghost, and has left the most complicated legacy.

The teacher chapter explores how teachers were able to develop through 30 years at P.S. V, presenting the fullness of the lives of teachers that seem unrepresented in professional development literature.

I describe and interpret the life of Public School V (P.S. V) in order to consider why people identify with and commit to the school. I describe the life of P.S. V in genealogical ghost stories. I suggest that schools are saprophytic organisms: living off of dead and decaying matter. The hauntings of memory give this school ongoing sustenance. The ghost stories are narratives of those who haunt the school. The stories are genealogical in that they trace the roots of what appears in the current school to the origins of the school and further back into the annals of progressive education. By piecing together stories of the school, I present a view of some of what makes the school “work.” In so doing I explicate the values of nakedness, community, and autonomy, and explore the curriculum of irreverence.

The “report of the data” begins with the founding of the school. This chapter outlines the triumphal accomplishment of parents' advocacy for their children which eventually led to organizing an alternative public school in which parents would be active participants, all forms of hierarchy would be leveled, the curriculum would be arts-based, and irreverence would guide its formulations and understandings.

The concluding chapter posits that nakedness, autonomy, and community are in a perpetual dance in which their competing claims must reckon with each other. This chapter also wonders how a school can really open itself to sexual and sensual curricula, when bodies are ignored in profound ways.
