The importance of nursing students developing their own self-care agency and wellness behaviors prior to caring for clients has been emphasized. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between self-care agency and wellness behaviors of nursing students, in the context of both their personal diverse backgrounds and their nursing student culture. A purposive, convenience sample was used which consisted of 58 senior level baccalaureate nursing students from three private, liberal arts colleges located in the New York area.

Both quantitative and qualitative methodologies were used for this study. Data collection was conducted in three phases. During phase one, self-reported surveys were used to measure the study variables. The instruments that were used were the Exercise of Self-Care Agency Scale (Kearney & Fleischer, 1979), the Test Well Wellness Inventory, College Edition (National Wellness Institute, 1999), and a researcher developed demographic data questionnaire. During phase two, focus group interviews were conducted at each of the three colleges to explore the nursing students' lived experiences with self-care and wellness. During phase three, interviews were conducted with the directors of each of the nursing divisions, to explore their perceptions of their nursing students' self-care and wellness behaviors.

A description of the nursing students' exercise of self-care agency, wellness behaviors, smoking behaviors and alcohol consumption was provided. Pearson's Product Moment correlations provided support for the significant positive relationship of exercise of self-care agency and wellness behaviors. Chi-square analysis supported significant relationships between employment status and perceived health state with exercise of self-care agency. Qualitative data analysis of the focus group interviews revealed the overall themes of definitions of self-care and wellness, descriptions of how the nursing students' self-care and wellness have changed, influencing factors related to self-care and wellness, and descriptions of the nursing cultural norms related to self-care and wellness. Positive and negative influences toward the nursing students' self-care and wellness within the nursing divisions and colleges were described by the directors. This study showed that the experience of being a nursing student had an impact on their self-care and wellness. Implications and recommendations for nursing education, practice, and research are provided.
