Traditionally, piano/keyboard instruction was taught in an individual/private lesson setting. Most music educators have never challenged the practice of individual piano instruction. By closely examining group piano instruction, it may be possible to determine the strengths and weaknesses of this approach and understand better what aspects of group instruction are effective. The purpose of the study is to understand better the role of dyad and small-group instruction according to the Pace Method.

The data collection was based on a qualitative research design, involving observation and interviews of the two instructors who both use the Pace Method of piano pedagogy. Qualitative techniques of data collection, such as participant observation, video-taping, and interviews were used to document dyad and group instruction as a possible alternative to individual instruction. The groups contained beginning, intermediate, or advanced students and were divided into a group of four plus a dyad. The time period of each observation ranged from thirty minutes to an hour and occurred for a total of six to eight times during the period of one semester.

The three issues that were the basis of this study were analyzed. In the first issue of peer interaction, both cases supported the fact that there was a constant level of peer interaction. In general the level of interaction was the same in both cases and in each instructional group. In the second issue of teacher-peer interaction, the level of teacher-peer interaction was constant. The last issue was the fulfillment of Comprehensive Musicianship according to the Pace Method. Every aspect of Comprehensive Musicianship was covered in both cases and in all instructional levels.

From this study one observed that advanced instruction was not only available in the dyad setting, but it also fulfilled the needs of Comprehensive Musicianship. Both dyad and group instruction does work in the intermediate and advanced levels. Music educators can look at some of the advantages and disadvantages of dyad and group piano instruction using the Pace Method and use it as an alternative to teaching piano instruction.
