The primary method of inquiry for this study was qualitative and ethnographic. In order to gain insight into the values, behaviors and beliefs of women student athletes, individual interviews, focus groups, observations and document analysis were utilized to collect information on peer group influence, the effect of the student culture on the college experience and how the athletic student culture impacted their allocation of time. The design provided the researcher with a method for describing, interpreting and explaining the academic and social world of the participants.

The findings of this study, which was conducted from August 8 through December 8, 1999, were concentrated on a single research setting, detailing the aspects of one women's athletic team comprised of 12 women. The findings were presented in the form of anecdotal responses. The women's athletic team, as a unit, was a subculture that had beliefs, norms, practices, behaviors and values distinctive enough to distinguish it from other groups within the same institution.

This study concludes that a women's athletic student culture existed on this campus. Friendship was viewed as the core relationship in the athletic student culture. Being on a team gave players an instant peer group, something they highly valued. Extra-curricular activities defined one's primary reference group as well as their personal identity. Students, including student athletes, were defined on campus by what activities they participated in outside of the classroom. Additionally, even though existing research indicates that participation in athletics can have negative effects on education achievement, the academic accolades received by this team revealed opposing results.
