The major findings of this study were: (1) Chinese graduate students perceived the following as their adjustment problems at Pitt: (a) academic adjustment problems, which included language problems, problems due to differences between the educational systems of China and the United States, problems concerning curriculum/program relevance, problems in completing school work, problems in interacting with classmates, problems in interacting with professors, and problems due to change of academic majors; and (b) socio-cultural adjustment problems, which included language problems, financial problems, cultural segregation, racial discrimination, food problems, health problems, housing problems, transportation problems, international student advisement problems, security problems, marital/dating problems, religious problems, tax problems, insurance problems, and shopping problems. (2) Chinese graduate students' coping behavior at Pitt included ten sources of help: (a) self; (b) professors; (c) Chinese friends; (d) Chinese student organizations; (e) Americans in general; (f) other international students; (g) family; (h) church; (i) Office of International Services (OIS); and (j) internet. And two general attitudes also showed up: (a) active participation/approach; and (b) passive escape/acceptance. (3) Chinese graduate students at Pitt differentiated the impact of their previous Chinese background on their adjustment into two aspects: (a) the academic/professional aspect; and (b) the socio-cultural aspect. Most of them considered that their previous academic/professional background in China has contributed to their adjustment here. With regard to the impact of their Chinese socio-cultural background on their adjustment, Chinese students had two basic attitudes: (a) emphasizing the gap between the socio-cultural systems of China and the United States and considering that their Chinese socio-cultural background has hindered their adjustment here; and (b) admitting the gap between the socio-cultural systems of the two countries but believing that their sophisticated Chinese socio-cultural background has contributed to their adjustment here. (4) Lysgaard's (1955) U-Curve theory did not apply to Chinese graduate students' adjustment process at Pitt because, in general, their adjustment process followed an upward line. (5) Chinese graduate students' suggestions for Pitt to help facilitate their adjustment included the following aspects: (a) about the Office of International Services (OIS); (b) about financial aid; (c) about professors; (d) about the library; (e) about the language program; (f) about providing more opportunities for social contact; (g) about housing; (h) about food; (i) about support services; (j) about support for academic research; (k) about orientation and advisement; and (l) some miscellaneous suggestions.
