Most research on international students has focused on their adjustment to the United States rather than examining their goals and expectations, especially how these factors have been shaped by globalization. This study concerns international students (F-1 visa holders) enrolled in a California community college and their background, expectations, and experiences in the context of globalization.

A mixed methods approach including a survey and interviews was used. A survey of 110 first year international students was conducted to create a student profile in terms of demographics, language skills, previous international experience, social networks, and goals and to aid in the selection of 20 interview subjects.

The most consistent findings were that: (1) Students expected to benefit from the flexibility of the American educational system and to gain career training that could not be provided in their home country on the same quality level. (2) Students also expected long-term career benefits in a global employment market. They pursued an American degree to acquire a broader perspective, certify skills in a global language, and demonstrate the ability to live in an international setting. (3) Students enrolled in the community college to facilitate their access to more prestigious four-year institutions. They cited the transfer function, academic flexibility, and cost as key reasons for attending a community college. (4) Students reported gaining global competencies from previous international experience especially language skills, adaptability, and greater independence. Their travel experiences raised their interest in study abroad because they developed a taste for international living as well as the networks that could facilitate their transition. (5) Students identified key skills, strategies, and attitudes that were essential for success in a globalized society: language skills in global languages, the ability to adapt to new situations and use social networks, knowledge of other cultures, open-mindedness, a sense of global responsibility, and independence.
