Thesis (Ph.D.)--Princeton Theological Seminary, 2002.
At its inception in 1947, the Church of South India (C.S.I.), the largest Protestant denomination in Southern India, united the ministry of many Protestant missionary societies working in the four southern states of India. In Kerala, the C.S.I. inherited the missionary activities of the London Missionary Society, the Church Missionary Society and the Basel Mission. Women's ministry was central to the missionary activities of these three societies in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Through their pioneering efforts in women's education, health-care, and medical training, the Protestant missionaries and Protestant Christians became leaders and reformers in Kerala. Christian women became role models for the secular women to follow.

This dissertation examines how the C.S.I. continued its ministry among women from its inception in 1947 to 1997. The development of women's ministry within the church and outside the church is analyzed in the historical context of the Protestant missionary activities among women and the cultural context of Kerala. I argue that even though Christian women were pioneers and leaders of women's rights during the missionary era (1806–1947), at the end of the twentieth century women in the C.S.I. follow the leadership of secular women. This shows that the changing role of women in the wider society of Kerala and structural changes within the C.S.I. during the second half of the twentieth century, combined with the changing role of the C.S.I. in Kerala society, contributed to this role reversal.

The positive changes that took place in the ministry of the C.S.I. women during the last two decades, including the ordination of women, and the new awareness among the C.S.I. women regarding their responsibilities in the wider society provide hope that the C.S.I. will once again play a vital role in the lives of women in Kerala.
