The so-called Chinese problem in Indonesia has existed for centuries. This study shows that the problem is rooted, not in ethnic differences between the Chinese and the indigenous, but in the hatred and prejudice between them and in the unjust social set-up that is established to segregate them for the interests of the ruling regime.

This study then examined the stories of Jesus' table fellowship in the Gospel of Luke in which Jesus demonstrates the all-inclusive kingdom of God where everybody, including the outcasts and sinners, is embraced and forgiveness is made the condition for reconciliation. This is the divine vision for the Chinese and the indigenous so that they might forgive each other, forget their historic past, forgo their hatred and prejudice against each other, and repent and be reconciled.

In this regard, the Indonesian churches have the role of forming the character of the Chinese and the indigenous, that they may become persons of embrace, forgiveness, love, and justice. This role is carried out by helping them to acquire, cultivate, and practice Christian virtues; by helping them to acknowledge the conformation to Christ and the kingdom of God as their telos; by providing Christian narratives through which they can interpret truthfully the reality of the world and other narratives that make claim upon their lives; and by providing social practices within which they are enabled to recognize and perform Christian virtues.

The Indonesian churches also have the role of transforming society by being the Church of the Incarnate Christ (the participating church) which does not withdraw from the world, but participates in the drama of God's works in history and advocates a holistic and inclusive ethics; by being the Church of the Crucified Christ (the redeeming church) which gives witness to God's judgment based on the standards of Jesus Christ and participates in God's acts of redemption of the world; and by being the Church of the Risen Christ (the modeling church) which models an alternative community that offers a social-political-ethical option to the world. Empowered by the power of the cross, the Indonesian churches will break the dominion of the powers through nonviolent means as they are carrying out their role in social transformation.
