This study reveals that American missionaries in Korea, being children of America's white, middle-class families, mainline Protestantism, and higher education, carried many of the American middle-class values, including modern capitalist pragmatism. It portrays how missionaries maintained American middle-class lifestyle in the Korean "wilderness" and shows what kind of religion they practiced among the Korean adherents. It also reveals the image of Korea they wanted to create in America, the underlying world-view behind it, and the cases and reasons of their gainful activities. To understand missionaries' beliefs and behaviors, their relations with the Student Volunteer Movement, New England Puritanism, and the Weber thesis are examined.

Korea did not legally allow religious freedom and foreigners' residence in the interior. American missionaries and their Korean followers, therefore, would face various forms of obstacles in performing their religious activities. However, Korea was not a field where Washington's interest was at stake. This study examines the place of missionaries in Washington's Korea policy and the treaty regulations, including extraterritorial rights. It shows the way how the American government and its representatives in Seoul tried to keep balance between protecting missionaries' technically illegal activities and keeping them from meddling in Korean politics.

American missionaries' widening paths came across the roads that Korean politicians and nationalists took. This dissertation examines the friendly and manipulative nature of the relationship between the royal family, Korean reformers, and missionaries. Besides, it shows how missionaries' American religion, thoughts, and lifestyle instilled revolutionary ideas among Korean youths, many of whom became outstanding leaders of the nationalist, pro-reform movement.
