This dissertation examines the oral literary genre of the muga (shaman's song) in Korean literature. While contemporary scholarship in this field is still in its infancy, an investigation of historical documents reveals the ancient roots of these religious songs and their importance to the peoples of these periods. Moreover, by being cognizant of the transformation experienced by shamanism, we can ascertain various aspects of social change throughout Korean history.

This study centers on the Pari kongju muga ( Song of the Abandoned Princess), a narrative muga performed as part of a shamanistic eschatological ritual. Possible historical origins of the song are uncovered by investigating similar ancient myths concerning earth-mothers and mountain goddesses. This inquiry also probes regional variations of Pari kongju and attempts to ascertain the reasons for differences in these renditions.

Particularly, I concentrate on the Seoul-Kyônggi version of Pari kongju, translated into English in the appendix, and the social values and criticisms contained in the narrative. My analysis enables an understanding of the social ethics most important to late Chosôn period females—the primary adherents and celebrants of shamanism. Among these values, most prominent in Pari kongju is the strong critique of the dominant Neo-Confucian ideology, especially practices surrounding male-child preference. Consequently, this textual examination enables insight into female aspirations in the late Chosôn period. Furthermore, Pari kongju is significant in its function as a metaphor and paradigm for the celebrants of shamanism, the mudang. This narrative reflects the hardships and social ostracization that mudang were traditionally confronted with by official society. Hence, a meaningful function Pari kongju is to establish a paradigm for mudang.

An essential consideration of Pari kongju is that this is performed literature that fulfills an important function in shamanistic funerary rites. Manifested in this narrative are essential beliefs in shamanism concerning the passage of the spirit of the dead from the profane world to the sacred realm. Moreover, the performance of this oral narrative is examined, thus allowing an understanding of the oral literary techniques that allow this lengthy narrative to be recited from memory by mudang.
