520 $a The aim of this study is to discover and describe the origins of Korean Presbyterian worship in order to indicate future directions for the reform of the worship of these churches. This study asks the questions: (1) what liturgical traditions did Presbyterian missionaries introduce into Korea in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries? (2) how did these early Korean Presbyterian liturgies develop? (3) how did these Korean patterns of worship compare to other, especially American, forms of Presbyterian (Calvinist) worship? These questions are addressed by a historical and theological examination of Korean Presbyterian worship from 1879 (when the first Presbyterian baptism of Koreans was performed in Manchuria) to 1934 (when the first Korean Presbyterian <italic>Directory of Worship</italic> [1922] was revised by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Korea).
520 $a Information about early Presbyterian worship in Korea is fragmentary, due in part to the difficulties of finding early Korean liturgical documents. This study, however, attempts to recover available early tracts and books that include liturgical instructions by the missionaries to Korea, and official liturgical texts of the Presbyterian Church of Korea. With these newly found liturgical materials and other historical documents of the Korean Church, this study describes the process and development of Korean Presbyterian worship (chapters II–IV), and analyzes the theology of worship expressed in these early documents (chapter V).
520 $a This study identifies five elements in the process of forming Presbyterian worship in Korea: (1) the liturgy of the Manchurian Church; (2) the mission methods of Dr. John Nevius, which were accepted by American missionaries in 1890; (3) revivalistic and puritan characteristics of these Presbyterian liturgies; (4) contemporary liturgies of the Presbyterian Church in the United States (South) as copied by the Korean Directory of Worship [1922]; and (5) cultural adaptations (contextualization) according to specifically Korean needs found in the liturgies in this early period of the Korean Presbyterian Church.
