Thesis (Ph.D.)--Westminster Theological Seminary, 1997.
During their occupation of Korea (1910-1945), the Japanese imposed Shintoism on the nation with increasing ruthlessness. Many Church leaders accepted their "patriotic duty" and compromised the faith. Many others, however, would not deny their Lord by engaging in ancestor and Emperor worship, and they suffering severe persecution, including imprisonment, torture, and martyrdom. After the liberation, the Church faced even worse persecution in Communist North Korea, and suffered mightily during the Korean War.

As soon as Korea was liberated from Japan, conflicts arose between those who had resisted Shinto shrine worship (and who were generally evangelical), led by the Released Saints, and the church leaders who had collaborated with the Japanese (and who were generally liberal in theology). When the compromisers refused to repent publicly and accept discipline, schism followed in the Presbyterian Church.

Extreme demands for repentance and for separation from others were made by the small Reconstruction Church, which fell into serious errors and schisms of its own (but is now moving away from those errors and toward reconciliation with other Christians).
