Umeko Tsuda (1864-1929) was a pioneer educator and a feminist in late nineteenth-century Japan, during the Meiji Period (1867-1912). In 1900, she founded Joshi Eigaku Juku, Women's Institute of English Studies in Japan. Influenced by her Western education, Umeko Tsuda believed that higher education would improve women's status in Japanese society. In 1871, she was one of five girls that the Meiji government chose to send on a mission to the United States. Umeko spent her girlhood at the Lanmans in Georgetown, near Washington DC. There she went to private schools for upper-middle class girls.

Umeko Tsuda was not a radical feminist. When she came back to Japan after eleven-year's stay in the United States, Umeko was severely shocked to see the lower status of Japanese women. Several years later, with the help of her American friends, Umeko could study at Bryn Mawr where she gained the concrete idea for women's higher education. Many American (as well as Japanese) friends agreed with Umeko's plan for founding a private women's institute in Japan and they organized a fund-raising committee. Finally, Joshi Eigaku Juku opened in 1900. Umeko's school (now Tsuda College) has been successful for almost a century. Most of the graduates have been active not only in their homes but also in various fields of Japanese and international societies. They inherit Umeko's spirit and keep high professional standards. They definitely contribute to raise women's status. Umeko's feminist idea has been inherited through women's higher education.
