Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Wisconsin - Madison, 2001.
This dissertation intends to explore the roles of drama in the telling of history, by focusing on a single incident, the labor dispute in Dublin, Ireland that affected thousands of workers, their families, supporters, and their employers and of the economic and spiritual devastation that ensued. I will examine and analyze seven dramas, written between 1914 and 1995, that present extremely divergent perspectives upon this event. This dissertation will address how culture and myth affect the style and shape of the drama and, more broadly, interrogate the role of history in the hands of the playwright.

I will address and present two theoretical models with which I will structure my analyses throughout: the anthropological work of Victor Turner, his use of the “social drama” survey of different societies, and his description of how each society structures its response to crisis along the parallel structure of the narrative drama; and Joseph Roach's cultural studies examination of “surrogation” and how it is utilized within the community. The dramatic surrogation of Irish strike leader Jim Larkin in five of the seven plays under discussion, and the uses each community makes of these surrogations as its foci change, will provide the dissertation with a model for examining historical representation.

The plays I will analyze are A. P. Wilson's The Slough (1914); Daniel Corkery's The Labour Leader (1919); Sean O'Casey's The Star Turns Red (1938–40); James Plunkett's The Risen People (1958); Margaretta D'Arcy and John Arden's The Non-Stop Connolly Show (1975); Thomas Kilroy's Talbot's Box (1977); and Sebastian Barry's The Steward of Christendom (1995).

This dissertation will examine the impact of these seven plays and inquire about the cultural uses within a community of telling, re-telling, and re-shaping its experience to itself, first to those contemporaneous to the event, and then to those who come after and only experience the (re)telling of someone else's memory. It will conclude with a recognition of the centrality of drama in this telling of a community's continuous history.
