Through the use of qualitative research methodology, this study addresses the effects of the inclusion of studio production activities in an adult art appreciation classroom on students' perceptions of their understanding of art concepts and of their appreciation of art in general. Prior to conducting the study, theoretical literature concerning learning and related empirical studies are presented in connection with the purpose of the study. This literature review in conjunction with the primary research question led to the development of five subsequent research questions upon which the study is focused. Conducted as participatory action research, the methods of data collection primarily involve interviews with students participating in studio production activities while enrolled in a one semester adult art appreciation course in a rural community college, and analysis of their reflective journals as well as questionnaires completed by the students and observations of these students during the studio production sessions by the teacher/researcher. Some students' initial anticipation toward studio involvement was negative, but in the end, based on the data, 32 of the 34 students in this art appreciation course viewed their overall involvement in studio production activities as having a positive effect on their knowledge and appreciation of art. On the basis of this study alone, it is difficult if not impossible to project far-reaching effects of inclusion of art production in art appreciation courses in general. However, the implication of this study is that the inclusion of the studio production component of art in the art appreciation course of study holds the potential for providing enhanced understanding and appreciation of art for the adult art appreciation student.
