The Bauhaus and its political presence in Germany prior to World War II.
- 71 p.
Adviser: Arthur Harshman.
Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Dominguez Hills, 2000.
The Bauhaus was formed in Weimar in 1919 and has been credited with influencing many aspects of modern art. This German school was also very politically active; the style of teaching reflected Communist ideals for integration of artistic expression and everyday functionality. Works produced by its students and instructors were so conceptually different and political in nature that they invoked persecution by emerging Nazi influences. The Nazis eventually shut down the Bauhaus in 1933, but many of its ideals have survived through former teachers and students. This study will make use of both primary accounts and secondary sources related to the Bauhaus, its teachers, and the contributing political atmosphere present in pre-World War II Germany. Results will be presented in (1) an overview of the Bauhaus, (2) prominent teachers, (3) views from former students, (4) political aspects of Bauhaus teaching, (5) Nazi condemnation, and (6) conclusions.
