Graphic design serves a communication function that has the ability to cross cultures; similarly, the skills utilized within the field are interdisciplinary. These crossover qualities entail a colorful mixing of ideas, traditions, and methods which keep the field ever-active, interactive, and alive. Graphic designers offer their visions to our society by utilizing visual creativity, as well as by practicing a wide range of problem solving skills. However, a core question in graphic design education concerns the integration of school practices with real world situations. Such an issue presents itself in a critical manner in Taiwanese post-secondary graphic design programs, which have been undergoing a transition from the vocational approach to a formal one. The purpose of the present study, therefore, is to understand the state of post-secondary graphic design education in its current development in Taiwan. By way of a scientific investigation, this study additionally aims to make possible the enhancement of systematic thinking towards the improvement of Taiwanese graphic design education.

The data were primarily collected by means of interviews with six program heads from various universities: four from Taiwan, one from the USA, and one from the UK. They each contributed their beliefs and experiences in response to open-ended interview questions. Documentation from these programs and the researcher's own observation notes were also used. The data were then correlated and analyzed according to four aspects: definition of design, mission of the program, methods of teaching, and developments of the field.

The findings were formulated according to the following themes: definitions, educational approaches, academic organization, learning environments, technical issues, and individual notions. Based on these fundamental observations, suggestions concerning further research on education in this field have been made. These suggestions offer a basis for improving the existing graphic design programs in Taiwan, and identify issues that need to be addressed to better obtain their goals.
