Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Los Angeles, 1986.
The preponderance of prior research on Easter Island has concentrated on its giant statues and ceremonial platforms; however, another component of the archaeological record is represented by several thousand specimens of rock art in the form of petroglyphs and paintings. This dissertation is based on a detailed study of the island's heaviest concentration of petroglyphs, located in the southwestern section. This area includes the volcanic crater of Rano Kau, Orongo, and the off-shore islet of Motu Nui. The rock art in this area is described and analysed, and an island-wide petroglyph typology is created. From these results major conclusions are drawn concerning design motifs and the evidence that they provide of social evolution. These motifs also elucidate, confirm, and interpret archaeological and ethnographical data in the prehistoric and protohistoric society.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Although many of Easter Island's petroglyphs appear to relate to myth, legend, or prayer, others are of more particular interest because they express the evolution of new religious cults. One of these, the birdman cult, replaced an earlier religion of ancestor worship sometime after A.D. 1500 and the data show that birdman motifs were symbols of power takeover by a victorious warrior class. In addition, it is determined that the birdman motif is an on-island development as is verified in the rock art, and was likely carved by master craftsmen who formerly were involved in the creation of the larger statues. Later, perhaps as late as the 18th century and as resources neared exhaustion, the rock art suggests that a fertility cult arose.

This thesis postulates that petroglyphs of birdmen served to legitimize the new social order and support the power structure. The striking motif of birdman, as well as certain other designs, provide verification for a series of events that have been recorded in the ethnology and suggested in the archaeology.
