Kelley, Charles Greg.
A folkloric analysis of narrative contexts in Shakespeare.
- 228 p.
Chair: Henry Glassie.
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Indiana University, 1996.
This dissertation examines narratives and narrative contents in Shakespearean drama, and connects with various essential concepts in the scholarly tradition of folklore and literature research. Initially, I identify the folk narrative situations in three of Shakespeare's plays, I Henry IV, Hamlet, and Othello. I examine the storytelling events in situ, as integral parts of the literary whole, and thus the dissertation is a project examining folklore in literature, an exercise combining both folkloric and literary critical insights. I demonstrate Shakespeare's vivid, authentic depiction of folk narrative situations, employed strategically for specific dramatic purpose. My process-oriented approach illuminates the nuances of social interaction between the Shakespearean characters in the narrative sequences, with the recognition that stories told by Falstaff, Hamlet, and Othello, like folk narratives in general, are rooted in social and cultural life. The dissertation embraces performance theory as a tool of critical analysis, while remaining focused singly on the literary text--thus distinguishing the project from much previous folklore and literature scholarship. Each chapter of the dissertation explores Shakespeare's adaptation and manipulation of a different narrative genre as presented in a given play: tall tale and I Henry IV, legend and Hamlet, life stories and Othello.
