In the automatic industry, an on-board engine fault diagnostic system is a necessary tool to detect and identify failure in one of the many parts in an engine. Especially, a detection algorithm for engine misfire is required (OBDII) to meet the regulation of exhaust emission control. In this dissertation, a nonlinear engine dynamic model has been developed to predict the dynamic motion of crankshaft. This model, which includes full time-varying engine inertia, is able to predict better than other commonly used control-oriented engine models. It is beneficial to use this full crankshaft model for model-based control and diagnostics.

On-board model-based detection algorithms for misfire and abnormal combustions have also been developed. Using the nonlinear engine model and sliding observer, cylinder pressure, combustion heat release, and output torque in an SI engine can be estimated. These estimates are then used to detect misfire or abnormal combustion in cylinders. Method of reducing estimation errors due to system unobservability were also discussed.

A runner-by-runner manifold pressure observer is also developed to estimate individual runner pressure and flow rate. This observer provides good phase-lag-free and noise-free estimation. The runner-by-runner intake manifold model is to develop an algorithm to detect burned inlet valves or other faults, which is a major cause of engine misfire. An algorithm of cylinder-by-cylinder air-fuel control based on this manifold model has also been developed. On-board cylinder-by-cylinder emission control and diagnostics will be achieved by the aforementioned models and algorithms.
