The conflicting requirements associated with emission control, fuel efficiency and driveability of internal combustion engine vehicles, make the engine control problem an appropriate candidate for the application of modern estimation and control techniques. Before the advantages of this methodology can be explored, a mathematical model is needed that accurately describes the engine dynamics, including exhaust emissions, and their response over wide variations of the engine control variables. To fill this need, a detailed nonlinear state variable model has been developed, largely from first principles, that simulates the operation of a single cylinder spark ignition engine over a wide range of operating conditions.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The engine model incorporates a detailed analysis of the reciprocating and rotating mechanism that allows for calculation of instantaneous torque, engine speed and crank shaft angle. The concentrations of the major gas constituents are tracked explicitly in the intake manifold, combustion chamber and exhaust manifold, taking into account the gas exchange process, and changes in component masses resulting from combustion and other chemical reactions. Fuel combustion is treated as a flame propagation process characterized by turbulent entrainment, followed by burnup of the entrained mass in the region behind the flame front.

Model response to varying inputs demonstrates good agreement with known engine response and available data. Areas of discrepancy are discussed and examined in greater detail. Future application of the model to control system design is examined by applying classical control techniques to a representative engine maneuver, and by describing the procedure for employing the model in modern estimation and control system development.
