Thesis (Psy.D.)--La Salle University, 2002.
Although there is a large body of literature available on the construct known as locus of control, it is overwhelmingly focused on categorizing individuals as internal or external. Moreover, certain characteristics have been attributed to individuals based upon these internal or external categorizations. This initial study was aimed at identifying individuals with a bilocal locus of control orientation or individuals who demonstrated both internal and external control expectations. Moreover, it was hypothesized that individuals with a bilocal locus of control orientation would demonstrate greater emotional stability than individuals with an internal or external control orientation. Questionnaires were completed by 205 participants and included instruments aimed at measuring locus of control, emotional stability and social desirability. Identification of individuals with a bifocal locus of control was supported by the data. Relationships between bilocality and various demographic characteristics, such as age, gender, education, race, and annual income are discussed. Analysis of the emotional stability data failed to support the hypothesis that bifocal individuals would demonstrate greater emotional stability than individuals with an internal or external control orientation. Reasons for this lack of support are discussed. Since the data supported the ability to identify individuals with a bifocal locus of control orientation, additional questions are suggested to further the study of this new dimension of a well known construct.
