ESL speakers have different experiences and difficulties in other areas because of their language and cultural background. This study looked at how these differences affect ESL employees' experiences with corporate communications. Schema theory formed the theoretical basis for this study. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews with ten ESL employees from California companies.

Findings showed that language and culture affected the way ESL employees participated in and responded to corporate communications as well as their understanding of some communication messages. ESL employees have difficulty understanding colloquial language. Even though words were understood, the context in which they were placed created confusion. Employees with different cultural backgrounds have different experiences with some aspects of corporate communications because their individual experiences have resulted in the development of different schemas. Schema theory applied to corporate communications could prove useful in helping organizations understand how their audiences understand and interact with corporate communications.
