Thesis (M.A.)--University of Missouri - Saint Louis, 2002.
This study analyzes university students' attitudes toward homosexuals. Students were on average slightly tolerant of homosexuality, and students were less tolerant of gay men and more tolerant of lesbians. Males, more than females, had more negative attitudes towards gay men; however, no significant difference was found in female and male attitudes towards lesbians. Male attitudes toward gay men were more negative than male attitudes toward lesbians. African American students revealed a consistent pattern of more negative attitudes toward homosexuals and lesbians than did other students. The review of the literature presents clear consistencies with findings in this study, especially the tendency of males to hold more negative attitudes toward homosexuality than females; however, little previous research has analyzed African Americans' attitudes toward homosexuals and the interesting patterns among different ethnic or racial groups. Results of this study are discussed from several theoretical positions, which includes the discussion of a sex/gender system to explain heterosexism. This study measures students self-rated gender ideology-identity and discusses how it specifically correlates with forming or adding to one's attitude toward homosexuals. The sex/gender system and the institutionalization of heterosexuality are discussed in analyzing students' attitudes toward homosexuality. Conclusions of this study and suggestions for future studies are also included.
