Thesis (Ph.D.)--Stanford University, 2002.
This thesis is divided into two parts. Part I deals with the group selection controversy that has raged over tire last, four decades within the field of evolutionary biology. My collaborators and I argue that different camps in this controversy may be employing different ways of parameterizing models of selection in group-structured population. We first demonstrate the mathematical interchangeabitity of the different parameterizatious and then demonstrate the heuristic advantages of each. We also discuss the topic of altruism and some hotly-debated statistical approaches in light of these different parameterizatious. Part II is concerned with the concept of niche construction. Here, the idea is that organisms, through their physiology, behavior, development and life activities, alter their physical world in ways that have selective repercussions. My collaborators and I model such feedback in several biological systems including learning animals, flammable plants and toxic bacteria. In the case of the last system, we also performed some laboratory experiments on bacterial communities to test some of our theoretical predictions.
