Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) are computer-based in-vehicle systems that provide navigation information to automobile drivers. It is important for user acceptance of ATIS to occur quickly, as route-selection performance is optimized when many automobiles are equipped with the systems. One important factor in user acceptance is how much users trust the technology. Muir (1987, 1994) has developed a theory of how people develop trust in automated systems. This study evaluated her theory by evaluating user trust with accurate and inaccurate ATIS products. Previous studies on this topic revealed that inaccurate congestion information reduced the users' trust in ATIS and limited compliance with ATIS advice. This study extended the previous research by evaluating the effects in a high fidelity driving simulator and by measuring trust, compliance, and driving performance. This study also looked at the effects of age on trust and compliance.

Participants drove through a simulation with the goal of avoiding congestion. A simulated ATIS recommended a route to avoid congestion. During the simulation, participants drove through four trials of ten intersections each. In one trial, the ATIS was 100% accurate. In the other three, the information was 80%, 60%, or 40% accurate. The four trials were presented to the participants in increasing, decreasing, or variable accuracy orders. Dependent measures included (1) trust in ATIS, (2) compliance with ATIS, and (3) driving performance. The results suggest that an accuracy level of 40% is not accurate enough to support user acceptance, but that 60% probably is. Age affected trust but not compliance; older drivers trusted ATIS more than younger drivers. Also, the order in which participants experienced the trials affected both trust and compliance.

Age and ATIS use both affected driving performance. Older drivers made more steering wheel reversals, but had better performance (fewer lane excursions) than younger drivers. In addition, while using ATIS, all participants drove more slowly, but with greater speed variance and greater lateral placement variance. Although some of the differences were small, they consistently indicated problems driving while using ATIS. The findings of this study led to several recommendations for ATIS developers.
