Warnings are often used to disseminate risk information. When a warning is given but the risk is not present, a false alarm occurs. The purpose of the four experiments was to examine three possible detrimental effects of false alarms: (a) the false alarm effect, whereby repeated false alarms lead to less warning response, (b) ignoring the warning, whereby repeated false alarms lead to the same protective behavior as no warning, and (c) a counterproductive effect, whereby false alarms lead to behavior that is less protective than no warning.

Experiment 1 examined self-reported driving speed decisions following photo-radar warnings. Participants received accurate warnings, false alarms, or no warnings. Participants who received accurate photo-radar warnings drove slower than participants who did not receive warnings, indicating a benefit of warning. Participants who received false alarms originally drove the same speed as participants who received accurate warnings, but following several false alarms, drove as fast as participants who did not receive a warning. The findings indicate that repeated false alarms lead to a false alarm effect and ignoring the warning. Using the same design, Experiment 2 increased the potential consequences of the warning to examine whether false alarms are ever counterproductive. Experiment 2 replicated the trends found in Experiment 1.

Experiment 3 examined additional warnings and the probability of a false alarm. The false alarm effect was not replicated, probably due to group differences at the first warning. With 25% false alarms, people drove as though none of the warnings were false, and with 75% false alarms, people drove as though all of the warnings were false. Experiment 4 was designed to replicate the questionnaire findings using a driving simulator, possibly a more ecologically valid measure. Participants' acceleration and speed variability suggested a false alarm effect and ignoring the warning, but there was not a false alarm effect for speed.
