Driver reactions to alarms of varying origin and reliability in collision avoidance warning systems.

Thesis (M.A.)--The University of Alabama in Huntsville, 2001.
There are many different approaches to the design of collision avoidance warning systems. Because of the wide range of systems available, it is necessary to know what kind of alarm represents the best design for the driving public. The primary goal of this study was to compare spatial to console emitted alarms within the collision avoidance warning system. This study compared reaction times and perceived reliability of console and spatial alarms by using a high fidelity driving simulator. Participants operated the driving simulator on a computerized roadway while a collision avoidance warning system alerted when there was a potential for collision. Results indicate that fewer collisions occur when alarms are emitted spatially than with console emitted alarms. Appropriate driving reactions occurred more often within systems the driver perceived to be of highest reliability compared to those systems perceived to be of lower reliability.
