Thesis (Ph.D.)--Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2002.
The rise of postmodernism creates significant challenges and opportunities for evangelism. This study seeks to demonstrate an effective method for the evangelization of postmodern people through an examination of the evangelistic method and theology of the apostolic church in Acts and Paul's epistles. Hopefully, the result of this study is a coherent, biblical model for evangelism.

This dissertation utilizes critical commentaries, monographs, and journal articles on the studies of Acts and Paul's epistles; monographs and articles on evangelism and postmodernism. Jacques Derrida, Richard Rorty, Michel Foucault, Jean Baudrillard, and Jean-François Lyotard have provided the primary source material on postmodernism. English, German, French, and Italian resources were consulted and utilized appropriately.

Following an introduction to the need for the study, chapter one summarizes the prevailing themes of postmodernism and addresses the problems and opportunities for evangelism. Chapter two demonstrates the role of the Holy Spirit as the epistemological bridge for the gospel. The Spirit establishes the “truth” of the gospel experientially and existentially in the evangelization of postmodern people. The function of community in an apostolic approach is the focus of chapter three. Chapters four and five delineate the more practical applications of an apostolic approach related to pluralism, pluralities, and personal evangelism.

This study reveals that an apostolic approach for the evangelization of postmodern people depends upon the work of the Spirit. Rather than a communal view of truth promoted in postmodernism, this study reveals that the community is created by the truth of the gospel established in the hearts of people by the Spirit of truth. Furthermore, this study highlights the function of an apostolic community in the evangelistic endeavor. An apostolic community satisfies the postmodern yearning for connection, so that the community's actions join with the Spirit's witness to Christ and His gospel. Finally, the tools for effective evangelization may be accommodated to the postmodern people as demonstrated by the speeches in Acts and Paul's personal strategy for mission in 1 Cor 9:1923.
