Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Texas at Dallas, 1996.
The problem of attributing and evading agency and personal responsibility has become all-pervasive in the conduct of modern life. The interdisciplinary study examines the ethics of agency and power in relation to eighteenth-, nineteenth- and twentieth-century narrative. The study combines the previously distinct approaches of moral philosophers, linguists and narratologists to such questions of agency as "who does what to whom?" "who is accountable?" "who speaks?" "who writes?" Divergent views of the human agent as those of John Locke and contemporary moral philosopher Charles Taylor are conjoined with the method of literary-stylistic inquiry developed by M. A. K. Halliday (including the textual analysis of agent (actor) and affected (acted upon) "roles"). Particular emphasis is put on the "evasive" stylistic choices made by writers of fiction and characterized by the avoidance of the first person, the use of agentless passive construction, and other means of alienating the doer from the deed. It is suggested that the resulting rhetoric of dissociation may subvert the ethical conception of the responsible human agent and thus put aesthetic and moral values at odds. The literary texts chosen for analysis (narratives by Daniel Defoe, Samuel Richardson, Herman Melville, Joseph Conrad and J. M. Coetzee) all deal with the interrelated issues of moral, linguistic and narrative agency. These include questions of authorship and power which become significant with the emergence of the English novel in the early eighteenth century and anticipate those still in the forefront of current literary criticism.
