The dendrites can be insulated by dip-coating them in a polystyrene solution or electropolymerizing an insulating polymer on top of them. These two insulation methods are moderately successful at minimizing crosstalk between adjacent polymer wires.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Growing an electrical interconnect between two electrodes in a non-mechanical fashion is important in the field of nanotechnology. Just as mechanical devices are not used to create a biological brain, mechanical techniques will not be able to create a network of connections in the same size regime as a neural network, or as complicated as a neural network. The possibility of using conducting polymer dendrites as electrical interconnects has been explored. AC electropolymerization of dendritic conducting polymers can be used to connect two platinum wires.

The polymerization conditions were varied in order to improve morphology, strength, conductivity and shorten the time needed to make connections. The variables involved in this study included electrolyte and monomer concentrations and the type of conducting polymer used (poly(3-methylthiophene), poly(3-octylthiophene), polypyrrole and polyaniline).

Another area of study has been the exploitation of the inherent doping and undoping properties associated with conducting polymers. This information is important in order to use polymer connections for storage or transmission of information. Polymer connections were doped to known conductivity values and the persistence of conductivity was monitored over time. The decay of conductivity was consistent with Fick's equation for diffusion of ions in a cylindrical solid. A polymer connection with a radius of approximately 500 $\mu
$m
maintained specific conductivity values for times on the order of tens of hours.

A polymer "artificial muscle" was created that swelled upon doping the polymer and contracted upon undoping the polymer. An electrochemomechanical actuator was synthesized by polymerizing 3-methylthiophene onto three collinear, Pt working electrodes. Physical contact to the inner electrode was controlled by the oxidation state of the surrounding polymer.
