This dissertation examines the wedding song repertoire of the Druzes of Jabal al-`Arab in southern Syria. I investigate how Druze identity and values are expressed through these songs, and how the community's identity is both affected by and reinforced through a collective memory of historical events as preserved in Druze song lyrics. The traditional wedding song repertoire provides an ideal context in which to study the relationship between collective and individual memory, and the connection between collective memory and history. The research is based on five and a half months of fieldwork in Syria, conducted from April to October 2000. During this period, I lived in Shahbā, a Druze town in Jabal al-`Arab, Suwaydā' province.

Following a brief background of Druze religious beliefs, history, and society, I provide an overview of Druze traditional music as practiced in Jabal al-`Arab. I draw conclusions about the function and importance of wedding music by analyzing videotapes of three weddings along a continuum from rural to urban. The conclusions are formed, in part, by comparing the actual weddings with a “model” wedding, which exists in the collective memory of the villagers. Based on this comparison, I posit that one of the most important wedding genres is the jawfiyya, a men's antiphonal song and line dance. Traditionally a war song, the jawfiyya was used in the past to motivate and unite the troops in preparation for battle. The Syrian Druzes, as a heterodox sect of Islam, have had to fight to protect themselves, first against other Muslims who persecuted them, then against the Ottomans, and finally against the French during the Mandate period. In addition to being a war song, the jawfiyya is a prime repository of Druze collective memory and values. Over time, war songs came to symbolize Druze identity.

I also explore changes to the traditional repertoire, including the adoption of “stereo,” the commercial audio cassette dissemination of popular Arab music, and a corresponding preservation of some of the genres as “folklore.” Finally, this study illustrates the effectiveness of song in expressing collective memory and identity.
