Thesis (Ph.D.)--Carleton University (Canada), 1990.
The dissertation explores the question of why theory committed to human emancipation remains poorly developed within the discipline of international relations. Taking as its point of departure the recognition that social and political theory on the one hand, and international relations theory on the other, can no longer be treated as fields separate and distinct, the dissertation draws on the insights of the first to explore the theme of emancipatory theorizing in terms of the second.

The lack of theorizing committed to human emancipation within the discipline of international relations is attributed to the predominance of the positivist approach to the study of international politics. The three core tenets that make up the positivistic logic of investigation--"truth as correspondence", the methodological unity of science, and the "value-free" nature of scientific knowledge--are treated in turn to demonstrate how together they serve to inhibit the development of the three central elements of emancipatory theory: theoretical reflexivity, attention to the creative role of human consciousness, and social criticism oriented toward emancipatory practice. Each of positivism's three core tenets is also challenged by calling into question the validity of the assumptions on which they rest.

However, the dissertation goes beyond identifying key impediments to the development of emancipatory theorizing within the discipline of international relations, and then challenging those impediments in the hope of creating a "space" for such theorizing within the discipline. For not only does the dissertation maintain that international relations theory must be re-ordered in a non-positivist direction, it also argues that recent (meta)-theoretical developments in the discipline should be interpreted as evidence that international relations theory is already in the process of being re-ordered.

In sum, the dissertation argues that international relations theory not only needs to be--but already is being--"restructured" as a form of emancipation-oriented, critical theory. If brought to fulfilment, the "restructuring" of international relations theory holds out a real hope that the discipline will make a meaningful contribution to the welfare and future of the planet.
