A number of MMPI studies have found that the original MMPI successfully distinguishes among women with different eating disorder diagnoses. Though only two published MMPI-2 studies with eating disorder subjects exist, the findings have not demonstrated the same degree of difference between eating disorder subgroups. The present study examined the ability of the newer MMPI instruments to distinguish between women with eating disorder diagnoses. Two hundred and seventy women from a specialized inpatient eating disorder treatment facility were administered the MMPI-2 or the MMPI-A. Multivariate analysis of variance with both inventories indicated no difference between the eating disorder subgroups. However, when groups were collapsed into the more general eating disorder categories (anorexia or bulimia), differences did emerge on the MMPI-2.

520 $a Clustering analyses were also utilized to explore whether empirically derived groups could shed more light on personality differences in eating disordered patients. When MMPI-2 and MMPI-A clinical scores (<italic>t</italic> scores) were used to cluster the subjects and outcome measures were used to validate the cluster solution, 4 clusters emerged on the MMPI-2 and 2 on the MMPI-A. Utility of the obtained clusters was limited as the obtained clusters were not found to bear any significant relationship to DSM-IV diagnosis nor were they found to shed any meaningful light on outcome difference.
520 $a A third goal was to explore the ability of MMPI scores obtained upon admission to predict outcome at termination. Results suggested that MMPI-2 subscales were found to predict Outcome Questionnaire-45 (OQ-45) change scores, OQ-45 discharge scores, and therapist ratings of improvement. Similarly, MMPI-A subscales were found to predict OQ change scores, therapist improvement ratings, and BMI (Body Mass) change.
520 $a A supplementary goal of this study was to examine whether MMPI scores change from the beginning to the termination of treatment. The results from pre and post test comparisons suggest that 5 of the 13 (L, F, K, 5, 9) clinical and validity scales were stable across treatment. These findings are consistent with previous findings that found scales 5 and 9 to be stable across treatment.
