McIntyre, Christopher Robert.
The spatial control of meaning through the mapping and marketing of patrimony in Catalonia, Spain.

Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Johns Hopkins University, 2000.
This dissertation argues that nationalists in Europe draw upon the products and processes of European integration in order to foster their goals of defining and defending their self-described cultures. It does this by examining the reconfiguration of Catalan space in the context of Spain's transition to democracy and entrance into the European Union. I focus on the links between place-making, sentiment, and nationalism. Over the past twenty years, Catalonia has become an autonomous region in Spain, and its government, the Generalitat, has recreated “traditional” Catalan geographical units, the comarques. The significance of comarques in Catalan nationalist thought hinges on the perceived connection between people, culture, and place. The dissertation focuses on the production of one comarca in particular: the Baix Emporda. In chapters on water, rural tourism, and agricultural production and consumption, I examine parallel processes whereby various groups define Catalonia's natural and cultural patrimony in a context of resurgent Catalan nationalism and the range of economic and social changes Catalans are undergoing.
