Attention on race and crime has waxed and waned in criminology. While studies of crime in urban areas focused on European immigrant groups early in the 1900's, the offending of African Americans, Latinos, and other groups was mostly ignored until a recent flourish of articles. The latest research addresses what many consider to be alarming race differences in crime, especially for violent offenses such as homicide. This dissertation addresses these differences by testing the hypothesis that they are demographic artifacts. That is, race differences in homicide result from demographic disparities between race groups. Specifically, age and sex compositions have been shown in previous studies to be associated with homicide rates.

520 $a The present study examines race-specific homicide rates estimated with three distinct data sources at two points in time (1980 and 1990). All independent variables are disaggregated by race. Race-specific and race-difference analyses are conducted. Findings suggest that race differences in crime are not due to differential age and sex composition, but instead are mostly the result of traditional criminological variables. In other words, Blacks and Latinos exhibit higher homicide rates because they live in conditions more conducive to crime than do Whites. However, the effects of some theoretical variables are inconsistent across race groups, and some of the consistent patterns do not corroborate theories of crime, or well-known interpretations of them. Therefore, future studies should refine theories by examining the inconsistencies and reconciling them.
