The contradictions of "embedded neoliberalism" and Europe's multi-level legitimacy crisis : the European project and its limits/ Bastiaan van Apeldoorn -- Neoliberal European governance and the politics of welfare state retrenchment : a critique of the new Malthusians / Magnus Ryner -- Geopolitics and neoliberalism : U.S. power and the limits of European autonomy/ Alan Cafruny -- Global finance and the European economy : the struggle over banking regulation / Hans-Jorgen Bieling and Johannes Joger -- "New Europeans" for the "new European economy" : citizenship and the Lisbon Agenda/ Sandy Hager -- Organic intellectuals at work? : the high level group of company law experts in European corporate governance regulationn/ Laura Horn -- Corporate tax reform in neoliberal Europe : East Central Europe as a template for deepening the neoliberal European integration project?/ Arjan Vliegenthart and Henk Overbeek -- Race to the bottom? : transnational companies and reinforced competition in the enlarged European Union/ Dorothee Bohle -- The rise of the competition state in the Visegrad four: internationalization of the state as a local project/ Jan Drahokoupil -- A national case-study of embedded neoliberalism and its limits : the Dutch political economy andthe "no" to the European constitution/ Bastiaan van Apeldoorn -- Globalization and regional integration : the possibilities and problems fortrade unions to resist neoliberal restructuring in Europe / Andreas Bieler.
This ambitious volume analyses the contradictions and tensions at the heart of European integration, economically as well as politically, and reveals the surprising ways in which these contradictions and tensions have manifested themselves. Concerned with the systemic logic or, indeed, illogic of European governance, it seeks to de-naturalize and deconstruct neoliberalism in the European Union. The contributions illustrate the complicity of key social forces in the spread of neoliberalismand finance-led economic strategies and identify the more or less active strategic role of specificsocial forces in establishing, guiding, mediating, or resisting its logic. The individual chapters include analyses of the changing geopolitical and geo-economic context; the politics of welfare state retrenchment, the Lisbon agenda; the struggle over banking and corporate governance regulation; the Eastward expansion of theEU; and of the contestation and mobilization against the European project, such as manifested in the national resistance against the Constitution as well as several other instances of (trans)national resistance.
