Politeness is an important part of language expression and communication. According to Brown and Levinson (1987), politeness utterances are based on contextually expected concerns for face, and there are three social factors which affect the speaker's concerns about the risk of losing face: the distance between the speaker and the hearer; the relative power between the communicators and the imposition of the task. However, differences in appreciation of politeness among various cultures may lead speakers to choose different expressions according to their cultural values. Thus, speakers with various language backgrounds differ both in the way they use linguistic politeness devices and in the way they perceive contextual factors (which determine the type and degree of politeness). To incorporate the cultural difference into Brown and Levinson's (1987) politeness model, I developed a formal model by adding cultural difference as a factor that affects politeness expression and perception. I have also empirically tested the new model using a survey of Korean ESL learners and English native speakers. In the survey, I carefully designed questionnaire to reflect the cross-cultural variability of requesting behavior with respect to politeness. In sum, the contribution of this dissertation is fourfold. First, I improved Brown and Levinson's theory by further refining the formal description of the model and by factoring in cultural differences. Second, this study is the first attempt to empirically test Brown and Levin's politeness theory using subjects with various cultural backgrounds. Third, this dissertation is one of the first studies to attempt to study the relationship between politeness weightiness perception and social factors in the context of second language acquisition. Fourth and finally, the findings of my study help us understand how cultural differences play a role in people's politeness behavior in speech acts.
