In this study, Deaf culture is moved from margin to center, as we learn how Deaf/Hearing pairs negotiate differing cultural realities and systems of meaning, address cultural power differentials, and navigate challenges of communication. Beginning with individual narratives and followed by a joint telling of the couple, three couples are asked to tell stories of their relationship temporally.

A postmodern narrative and reflexive approach is used to organize, interpret, and deconstruct the multi-layered relationship stories and multi-contextualized narratives of Deaf/Hearing couples. The interpretive findings underscore the salience of understanding multiple' contexts and the rich multiplicity within as contributors to shaping the storied nature of one's reality. The study promotes the postmodern view of an ever-evolving self, which is dialogically dependent, culturally based, and lived out in narrative form.
