The research design is a compilation of qualitative research methods drawn from case study and comparative analysis design. Data collection includes two individual background interviews, two classroom observations, an observation follow-up interview, a faith-based interview, and a whole group interview. The analysis was done on a case-by-case, cross-case, and cross-groups levels.

The findings show that there are important commonalities and differences within each group and across groups. For example, on a case-by-case level, the life experiences and religious beliefs of each shape teachers' unique teaching paradigms. Bible instruction is largely informed by these personal teaching paradigms. On a cross-case analysis level, the study shows that regardless of the personal nature of teachers' paradigms, teachers within each group share common themes for the teaching of Bible. In the case of the Jewish teachers, Bible instruction focuses on students acquiring access skills to read translate, and interpret the Hebrew Bible. The Catholic teachers use Hebrew Bible in order to help students facilitate a relationship with God. On the cross-group analysis level, both groups define themselves as religious educators, expect their teaching to have a long-term impact on students' lives, as well as help students relate to their communities. Both groups struggle with teaching religion in an academic setting. However, the way in which the two groups address this challenge is entirely different.

This study has significant implications for research on teacher thinking, Bible teachers' classroom practice, conceptualization of teaching Bible, teacher education programs for teachers of religion, and Bible teachers in particular, as well as for the professionalization of Bible education as a subfield of religious education.
