Today Vietnam is praised by the World Bank and other international capitalist institutions as a success for its transition from socialism. This thesis investigates the obstacles Vietnam encountered in post-war reconstruction and in the reunification of North and South Vietnam, and how these problems affected the establishment of socialism. The thesis traces the increasing influence of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank on the Vietnamese economy as Vietnam sought international loans for its debt service obligations and for economic development. It describes how the economic reforms diminished the well-being of the majority of Vietnamese people. Research involved reading economic and political analyses of recent Vietnamese history as well as World Bank and International Monetary Fund projections and work summaries. The author's conclusion is that socialism no longer exists in Vietnam, and that this country has conformed to a neoliberal model of economic development.
