Thesis (Ph.D.)--Arizona State University, 2008.
The present study is an examination of the structural validity of Holland's model of vocational interests across racial/ethnic groups. Structural validity is a critical component of construct validity, because it is critical to determine that the conceptually distinct elements of a model relate to one another in a manner consistent with theory. However, due to limited samples and inconsistent methodology, the literature on this subject is equivocal. This study obviates these methodological problems. Sample data were gleaned from a large, representative sample of high school juniors for whom the American College Test (ACT) assessment was a graduation requirement. The fit of Holland's theoretical structure, as operationalized by the Unisex edition of the ACT Interest Inventory-Revised (UNIACT-R) was tested for the aggregate general sample and five disaggregated groups: Caucasian/Euro-Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos and Native Americans. Five different methods were used to test fit of the proposed circumplex structure of vocational interests, each with various definitions of the circumplex: Constrained 3-way Multidimensional scaling, randomization test of hypothesized order relations, circular unidimensional scaling, and two structural equation modeling programs: LISREL and CIRCUM. The former three are non-parametric methods. Results indicate that the non-parametric methods generally indicated good model-data fit, whereas LISREL and CIRCUM results were somewhat equivocal. In terms of differences across ethnicity, no significant differences were found. These results suggest that non-parametric models fit the data better and that there were no major differences across ethnicity on these models.
