This mixed method non-experimental study sought to compare the attitudes of college level studio teachers across different instrumental groups by surveying via email faculty who were listed in the most recent College Music Society Directory. To prepare items for the survey, studio teachers were asked to complete a questionnaire and then interviewed. Survey respondents were asked about their attitudes regarding two comprehensive research questions, the first concerning goals and values and the second concerning teaching strategies. Related to the question concerning goals and values, there were items (subordinate conceptual areas) that specifically concerned "Teaching and Artistry" and "Individuality versus Authority," as well as related questions concerning common assessment strategies. Related to the second question concerning whether studio teachers shared common teaching strategies, there were items grouped in a subordinate conceptual area that explored practice expectations.

An online survey was used as a quantitative compliment to interviews and analysis of literature in order to investigate the attitudes of college level instrumental music studio teachers. Chi-square tests showed that for all but two items responses did not significantly vary across instrumental groups, suggesting common attitudes, strategies and goals among college level instrumental music teachers.
