Study after study has shown that music education significantly increases early brain development and improves students' overall academic performance. What educators must realize is music is the universal language that establishes a common bond among all subjects and people. Music has an enormous impact on every facet of our lives, so it would make sense to ardently develop and advance music programs. Instead, school budget crunches and more teacher accountability is causing the importance of music to diminish.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The study examined the impact of music instruction on student achievement in selected Southwest Texas public schools with kindergarten through twelfth grade students. Educators interested in student achievement, effective and efficient approaches to meeting accountability expectations, and diverse teaching methods should consider the valuable impact of music instruction. The study examined the perceived levels of music instruction implementation at several public schools in Southwest Texas and the influence it has on student achievement.

The sample for the quantitative portion of the study consisted of 121 respondents: 7 elementary music educators, 9 secondary music educators, 83 non-music educators, 16 administrators/directors, and 6 school board members. The questionnaire instrument was comprised of 13 questions using a Likert response scale means of evaluation. One qualitative question was included in the questionnaire to get a better understanding of the respondents' perceptions. Furthermore, the quantitative section of the study examined data from the Management Information System (MIS) department extracting TAKS scores from students who were in music appreciation classes versus students who were not in any music appreciation classes.

Qualitative data were gathered through semistructured interviews consisting of ten open-ended questions. The respondents for the qualitative portion of the study were a purposive sample comprised of four elementary music educators, two non-music educators, four administrators, and two school board members. An analysis of descriptive statistics as well as interview responses were applied to examine the perceived effects of music instruction on student success. Elliot Eisner (1981) believed that an artless school is an impoverished place. In order to provide grand opportunities and enrichment throughout public education, music must be part of the equation.
