This study investigated the relationship between time perception and music preference for music and nonmusic majors. Specific experimental questions were (a) Does apparent duration (perceived time) vary with preference for music? and (b) Do time perception and music preference vary with level of music training (music major and nonmusic major)?Subjects--Topical Terms:

Level of music training (music major/nonmusic major) was the independent variable. Perceived time and music preference were the dependent measures. Perceived time was determined by a production task in which each subject tapped the microphone of a recording cassette player when a perceived 25 sec duration of music played over external speakers had elapsed. Subjects indicated preference for each of eight instrumental popular music examples by rating each on a 7-point Likert scale. Music selections were similar in tempo, style, prolation, and intensity, and ranged from 48 to 56 sec in duration. Four random orders of the selections were randomly assigned to subjects.

Data were gathered from 80 university students, with equal numbers of music and nonmusic majors. Subjects were individually tested in groups of four or fewer. Six hundred and forty music preference ratings and 630 perceived time judgments were obtained from the subjects. Statistical analyses revealed the following results: (1) There were no significant correlations between perceived time and music preference measures. (2) There were no significant differences between the length of time judgments of music majors and nonmusic majors. (3) There were no significant differences between the preference ratings of music and nonmusic majors. (4) There were no interactions between level of training and perceived time or between level of training and music preference measures. (5) There were significant differences among music selections in perceived time and music preference measures (p $<$.0001) for both music and nonmusic majors. (6) There were no significant interactions between selections and level of training.
