The treatment and control groups consisted of students enrolled in undergraduate music class classes as a state college in Northern New Jersey, and a university in Southern Indiana. There were forty two subjects in the experimental groups (28 in New Jersey and 14 in Indiana), and thirty six subjects in the control groups (20 in New Jersey and 16 in Indiana). Treatment was administered in the form of lectures, films, listening, readings, and discussion. The Mumford Afro-American Popular Music Attitude Scale (1982) was used to obtain data. This data was then analyzed using analysis of variance procedures.

The results indicate that the degree to which a subject prefers Afro-American Popular Music was slightly effected, that the degree of acceptance of Afro-American Popular Music was strongly effected, and that a course of instruction has mixed effects on subjects by race. As a result of these findings, the following recommendations were made: (1) That a course of similar nature be taught as an interdisciplinary effect and empirically validated. (2) That further study be conducted in the area by students who actively participate in musical experiences during the course.
